The Wagga City Rugby Male Choir was initially formed on Wednesday 10th May, 2000 with the dream of a Rugby Choir driven by Dave Mundy and under the musical leadership of Chris Fox. Ably assisted by Jo Wicks on piano, a core of about 8 singers practiced regularly in the Kindergarten rooms of South Wagga Public School. Despite a long season of rehearsal, the choir didn't quite get around to performing to an audience before accompanist, Jo Wicks, departed for the border country. The choir went into recess at the end of 2000. Definitely an untapped resource in the choral landscape of Wagga Wagga!
After a 5 year break the choir reemerged in 2006 under the same team. The Wagga City Rugby Male Choir now boasts 65 members and a string of highly acclaimed performances (by us anyway!) including Junee, Crookwell, Orange and Canberra. Among the many highlights of the choir’s short history are the hosting of three Choir Spectaculars at the Wagga Civic Theatre in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and the choir’s involvement in the Maestro and the Men Concert conducted by Alwyn Humphreys and held in the Llewellyn Hall, Canberra on Saturday 22nd November, 2008. Our most recent highlights include being part of a three hundred voice choir at the Sydney Town Hall in November and the choir’s 2010 tour of Germany, England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The WCRMC was privileged to be able to sing in Nordlingen and then in Britain with the Budleigh Salterton MVC, Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir, Aber Valley MVC, Linlithgow RFCMVC and Barrow MVC. An incredible experience indeed.
The aim of the choir is to give an opportunity for those who wish their voice to be heard to get together with like minded gentlemen, sing for fun and enjoy a few beers afterwards. A most important aspect of the choir is its suitability for all levels of singing ability. The group practices each Tuesday from 5.30pm to 7.30pm in the South Wagga Public School Library. New recruits are welcome.
